Does spirulina make you slim?
The short answer is: when used correctly, yes!
Why? Spirulina is as nutrient-rich as it is low in calories. This superfood helps you easily supply your body with all the essential nutrients. Its high protein content curbs your appetite , naturally reducing feelings of hunger. You can easily achieve this effect by consuming the algae 15-20 minutes before a meal.
Full of energy to reach your ideal weight
Spirulina is rich in protein, contains all essential amino acids, iron, vitamins A and B, minerals, and antioxidants. It's a veritable bouquet of beneficial properties and a guarantee that you won't lack essential nutrients, even while dieting. Reducing or eliminating certain foods can lead to energy loss and even deficiencies. Spirulina is particularly rich in iron and, according to an EU health claim, contributes to the reduction of tiredness. It therefore helps prevent energy loss, vitamin and mineral deficiencies during a diet, and keeps you in top shape. What's more, spirulina is low in calories : the recommended daily dose of 2 teaspoons for a one-month course contains just 20 calories.
Saturating protein
Scientists have investigated the connection between protein and satiety : Consuming protein naturally satisfies hunger for several hours after a meal. Spirulina consists of 60 to 70% plant-based protein. These proteins are complete, meaning they contain all the essential amino acids that must be obtained through food, as our bodies cannot produce them. In short: Unlike all other plants, its cell membrane contains no cellulose, thus enabling a high level of assimilation of all its nutrients in the human body. In other words: The protein of the spirulina algae is very easily digestible.
The amino acid phenylalanine
Due to the abundance and quality of its proteins, spirulina contributes to a feeling of satiety and thus helps with effortless weight loss. The amino acidphenylalanine plays a particularly important role in this: A scientific study with overweight and obese individuals showed that consuming this amino acid contributes to a long-lasting feeling of fullness . The participants were able to reduce their daily calorie intake by an average of 11%. This is because phenylalanine stimulates the production of cholecystokinin (CCK) – a hormone that suppresses appetite and triggers a rapid feeling of satiety.
To achieve this effect, it makes sense to consume your favorite spirulina product 15 to 20 minutes before a meal. This increases the concentration of CKK in your blood and automatically reduces your appetite.
To achieve the appetite-suppressing effect, it is ideal to consume 3 to 6 g of spirulina before each meal, preferably pure in the form of powder, tablets or natural spirulina crumbles or flakes.
• Tablets : Take 6-12 tablets before each meal.
• Powder : The recommended dose is 1-2 teaspoons.
• Sprinkles/Flakes : This is the most recommended form of spirulina because it is the least processed . It therefore has the highest nutrient content. Chewing the sprinkles releases enzymes in the saliva that promote digestion, which in turn improves nutrient absorption. And the better the proteins can be utilized, the greater the feeling of satiety. Chewing also plays a key psychological role in the feeling of fullness.
The exact dose can vary depending on your diet and appetite. It's best to start with a teaspoon and increase the dose as needed. Of course, you shouldn't overdo it. While an overdose of spirulina doesn't have severe side effects, it also won't have any positive effects on your health.
Losing weight with enjoyment
The algae's effect is optimally enhanced when combined with fresh, vitamin C-rich fruits such as kiwi or orange: this is the best way to absorb the iron it contains.
Bonus factor: Fruit is easier to digest when eaten before a meal anyway! So how about a small bowl of fruit salad as a starter, mixed with 1-2 teaspoons of spirulina crumbles?
If you're short on time, you can also take your spirulina in a glass of fruit juice : simply stir 1-2 teaspoons of powder into your favorite juice and drink it a quarter of an hour before eating. Fresh, unpasteurized fruit or vegetable juices are ideal here, as they still contain all the vitamins.
You can take spirulina as a course of treatment for 1-3 months , then take a break and resume as needed. However, it is also safe to take spirulina continuously.
