Raw cacao – the superfood

Let's be honest: We all love chocolate. Right?

From childhood on, this melt-in-your-mouth temptation has been with us. Whether as a warm, comforting drink in the morning, as an egg-shaped wrapper for plastic toys, or molded and wrapped in colorful foil for the Christian holidays. Haven't you ever taken a delicious bite out of your chocolate Santa's head?

Those who secretly still mourn the loss of those days of unadulterated chocolate enjoyment should take comfort in this: Even grown-ups are allowed to indulge in the pleasure of cocoa with a clear conscience!

What makes cocoa so irresistible to us is not sugar and fat, but the wonderful ingredients which, in their raw form, have so many positive properties for our health that raw cocoa is even considered a superfood.

What exactly is raw cacao?

Typically, after harvesting, the cacao fruit is fermented, dried, and then roasted. With raw cacao, the last step is omitted – thus preserving significantly more healthy nutrients.

Even the Aztecs knew about raw cacao and valued it for its heart-strengthening, energizing, and mood-enhancing properties. No wonder it was called the "food of the gods" back then.

The following legend has also been passed down:

What legend is told about the cacao tree?

In Mesoamerican mythology (Mexico, 15th century CE), the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl is considered the goddess of agriculture and possessed all the world's wealth. As the gardener of paradise, she bestowed upon humankind a priceless gift: the cacao tree – a symbol of wealth and strength. From its fruit, people developed various preparations, including the drink Xocolatl : a mixture of raw cacao, spices, and water. Bitter, spicy, and refreshing for body and mind.

Why is raw cacao considered particularly healthy?

Raw cacao consists of 54% cacao fat, 11.5% protein, and 9% cellulose. It also contains over 300 other ingredients .

Because raw cocoa is processed gently below 42 °C, a particularly large number of these substances are preserved:

  • Flavonoids and polyphenols → powerful antioxidants
  • Epicatechinhas been proven to reduce the risk of heart attack, cancer, diabetes and strokes.
  • B vitamins (B1, B5, B6, folic acid) → temperature-sensitive, are only preserved in raw food

Why does cocoa make us so happy?

In addition to the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine , the alkaloid theobromine also plays an important role. It has a similar effect to caffeine, but milder:

  • gently stimulates the nervous system
  • It promotes vitality and a good mood
  • improves cholesterol levels

In short: Cocoa not only makes us happy, but also has a positive effect on the heart and metabolism.
