Spirulina from Hesse, Germany

After many years of research, Algen Markt has been offering raw, German-grown spirulina since 2018. From cultivation and harvesting to marketing, we pursue a sustainable and resource-conserving approach. For example, our farm near Bad Hersfeld is energy self-sufficient thanks to a heat recovery system. This has made the algae a local superfood for us – climate-neutral and resource-efficient. This aligns perfectly with our philosophy of whole-food nutrition , which focuses on sustainability at every level ( see blog article on whole-food nutrition ).

Local Spirulina

With local cultivation, we want to establish algae cultivation, a part of aquaculture, as a new branch in agriculture.

Natural Spirulina

No pesticides or plant protection products are needed for growing spirulina. Furthermore, we use renewable energy and employ a heat recovery concept: the heat produced by a biogas plant heats the algae pond. This is climate-friendly and sustainable.

Unprocessed spirulina

All our products are raw vegan. We harvest the spirulina by hand and dry it gently below 42°C to preserve all the valuable nutrients.

Social Spirulina

At every stage of production, we also want to consider the social aspect of food production. Think ahead. Our beverage powders, for example, are mixed and packaged by Lebenshilfe in Caen, France. In Hesse, Algen Markt cooperates with the network Antonius in Fulda, in order to offer spirulina bread. We pay a fair, market-independent price for all our raw materials, which is based on the effort involved and the quality of the product.

Economically viable spirulina cultivation

We are convinced that agricultural products must reflect their value in their price – we offer good quality at fair prices and stand for transparency and direct marketing . Algen Markt is one of the small-scale farming businesses that do not receive agricultural subsidies.

Enjoy Spirulina

Enjoyment is our top priority. That's why we process and dry our spirulina gently: this allows the algae's natural, subtly spicy umami flavor to fully develop (conventional hot drying methods usually transform it into a harsh, fishy taste). In addition to the usual forms like powder and tablets, we also offer spirulina as flakes and sprinkles. This allows the algae to be sprinkled like a seasoning on both savory and sweet dishes – bringing out the dishes' natural flavors. Simply delicious! How do I recognize good spirulina? Here are our criteria: 5 tips on how to identify quality spirulina. Here's a little glimpse into our farm and production process.

Spirulina pioneers

First spirulina farm and cultivation in Germany. We have been developing high-quality algae cultivation since 2014.

CLIMATE NEUTRAL

Algae cultivation is climate-negative. We sequester more CO2 than we consume, thanks to a heat recovery concept, intelligent craftsmanship, and short transport routes.

RICH IN NUTRIENTS

Harvested at the right moment, gently dried and tightly packed to protect against light and air, our German Spirulina remains rich in nutrients.
